Route 66 Independent — A 1-year-old child died Wednesday after a medical emergency at a Tijeras daycare, prompting an investigation by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and forcing the school to close for the rest of the week.
Deputies responded around 12:11 p.m. to New Mexico Early Learning Academy in Tijeras after the child was reported unconscious and not breathing, BCSO said in a press release. The child was taken to a hospital, where they later died. BCSO said there are currently no indications of foul play or neglect.
NMELA told families in a statement included with the release that staff began emergency response protocols immediately and that first responders arrived within minutes.
The school said it will remain closed the rest of the week and is offering counseling and grief support to staff and families.
Families were told to expect changed pickup procedures while first responders and investigators remain on site, and to park along nearby streets rather than in the school’s normal pickup area.
