Commissioner Olivas targets legislators for District 5 funding
In the final two weeks of the legislative session, Bernalillo County Commissioner Eric Olivas is asking state legislators to direct discretionary funding toward nine public infrastructure projects that could improve the quality of life in District 5.
The projects located in District 5 include:
- $300,000 for the Sedillo Ridge Open Space
- $700,000 for an East Mountains baseball complex
- $500,000 for repairing roads
- $2,500,000 for Carnuel water and sewage construction
- $1,000,000 for the Los Vecinos Community Center
- $1,500,000 for the Hahn Arroyo and Trail
- $1,000,000 for a Northeast Heights Animal Care Facility.
He also directs attention to two projects that are outside of District 5’s borders but could still be used to the benefit of its residents: $5,000,000 for building an outdoor sports complex at Mesa del Sol and $1,000,000 for renovating the Juvenile Detention and Youth Services Center.
District 5 encompasses much of the East Mountains area and Albuquerque’s east side as well as part of Uptown. Six state senators and seven state representatives have jurisdiction that overlaps the County Commission, and in a Bernalillo County newsletter he encourages residents to contact each of them: “I need your help, if you feel strongly about a project or several projects, please send an email to your legislators or pick up your phone and call their office and let them know you want them to help with a particular project.”

The legislative session ends on Feb. 19.
