The Edgewood Town Commission selected Mike Rariden as mayor and Stephen Murillo as mayor pro tem during a special meeting Jan. 20.

Rariden, who represents District 5, and Murillo, who represents District 4, will each serve two-year terms in their new leadership positions.

As mayor, Rariden will serve as the municipality’s official head for ceremonial, civil process and military purposes. He will preside over commission meetings and assume additional financial responsibilities.

The mayor pro tem fills in for the mayor when absent or unable to serve.

Under Edgewood’s commission-manager form of government, the five-member commission must select one of its members to serve as mayor following each regular election.

Ken Brennan, District 1 commissioner, and Patrick Milligan, District 3 commissioner, completed their terms as mayor and mayor pro tem, respectively. Fellow commissioners thanked them for their service in those roles. Both remain on the commission.

The commission also appointed Diana Williams, Shelly Hutchinson and Angela Holmes to the Planning and Zoning Commission and named eight residents to various advisory boards.

Three candidates were referred to the municipal judge for consideration as an alternate municipal judge, a position that serves when the municipal judge is unavailable.
