The Edgewood Lions Club will host a Stuff the Bus Food Drive on Saturday, collecting nonperishable food items and monetary donations to support local food assistance programs.

The drive runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Edgewood Smith’s, where volunteers will fill a Rural Transportation Department Blue Bus with donations.

Proceeds will benefit the East Mountain Food Pantry and Moriarty Elementary School’s Food Closet. The organizations were selected due to high food insecurity rates affecting New Mexico children.

Saturday’s event follows a successful December food drive in which the Edgewood Lions Club partnered with the North Central Regional Transit District, the Town of Edgewood and the Sandia Mountain Lions Club to collect more than 1,200 items for families in need.

According to Feeding America, a national anti-hunger organization, one in six New Mexico adults and one in four children lack adequate daily food.

The event coincides with Lions International’s annual Hunger Awareness Week, during which Lions Clubs worldwide organize activities to combat food insecurity.

“The work to fight hunger is never-ending and as long as one person goes to bed hungry, we will be here working to serve them,” said K.R. Scott, president of the Edgewood Lions Club.
