Local residents who receive power from CNMEC should plan to be without power most of Saturday afternoon while the utility completes upgrades to a new transformer on the grid.

According to Central New Mexico Electrical Cooperative, the outage is scheduled for Saturday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm and will impact various parts of Edgewood and Sandia Park, though main commercial areas in Edgewood will remain energized.

The new substation transformer for Edgewood, Sandia Park and surrounding areas is finally ready to be energized!! This transformer has 3 times the capacity of the old one, and should be able to handle the growth in our area for years to come. In order to do this, we do have to turn power off from 1:00 to 5:00 pm for a large number of members.  We will be keeping the main part of Edgewood (Smith’s, Walgreens, Walmart and the businesses and homes around them) energized.  The following areas will be out of power:

  • Sandia Park
  • Sandia Knolls
  • Cedar Grove
  • Members along Highway 344 north of Venus Road, along with side roads
  • Members along Highway 472, along with side roads
  • Members east of the substation on Venus Road
  • East of Highway 344 down Dinkle Road to Martin Road, along with side roads
  • Martin Road south from Dinkle to I-40
  • Members along Edgewood 7 south of Sonic
  • Juniper Hills and surrounding areas

Installation of the new transformer is part of a three-phase upgrade to the local grid which included a new transformer in Moriarty last year, this Edgewood-area transformer this month and a new transformer in Mountainair next month, according to CNMEC.
