The Friends of the Sandia Mountains announced it will host the 22nd annual Sandia Snowshoe Classic on Jan. 24, 2026, at Sandia Crest, offering winter outdoor enthusiasts a challenging 5K course through the Cibola National Forest.
The event, which begins at 11 a.m. at the lower-level parking lot at Sandia Crest, is limited to 175 participants ages 13 and older. As of this week, 107 spots remain available. Registration closes Jan. 22 at noon and costs $45, which includes refreshments, commemorative items, parking and processing fees.
“Join us for a fun 5K in the middle of winter in the Sandias,” organizers said in announcing the event.
New this year is a prize category for best costume, encouraging participants to don creative outfits for the snowy trek.
The nonprofit organization has sponsored the winter event under a U.S. Forest Service permit since 2001, with cancellations only in 2018 due to insufficient snow and 2021 because of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Mike Madden has served as race director since 2022.
Participants must provide their own snowshoes, though several Albuquerque retailers offer daily rentals. Runners and walkers of all skill levels are welcome, though elite racers regularly compete. Top finishers receive cash prizes, with awards for the top three male and female overall winners, plus age group recognition.
JackRabbit Race Management will provide timing services for the event. Organizers encourage carpooling due to limited parking at the 10,678-foot elevation starting point.
All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Sandia Mountains’ trail preservation and maintenance efforts and other Forest Service resources in the area.Registration is available at the FOSM website. No race-day registration, refunds or entry transfers are permitted.
