A local advocacy group will host a food drive Nov. 28 to support the East Mountain Food Pantry as demand for food assistance continues to grow in the area.

The East Mountains Protection Action Coalition will collect donations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 28 at Lantern Ridge Farm, 2540 N. Highway 14 in Sandia Park. The drive coincides with the farm’s Black Friday Crafter Market.

Donors who bring non-perishable items will receive a coupon for 10% off purchases at Lantern Ridge’s restaurant, market and nursery through March 31, 2025. The discount applies to Christmas trees.

“The people of the East Mountains communities are incredibly generous, and we want to thank them for their support by giving back to the community,” said Charlene Smith, a spokesperson for the coalition.

Smith said the food pantry faces increasing demand from residents experiencing food insecurity. The coalition hopes the community will show the same support for the food drive as it has for the group’s efforts to oppose development in the area.

“We have witnessed that by uniting together for a common cause, we can continue our important fight to keep the East Mountains free from irresponsible development,” Smith said.

The food pantry has identified several items in high demand, including peanut butter, canned proteins (such as chicken, tuna, and salmon), canned beans, pasta and pasta sauce, canned vegetables, and cooking oils (such as olive and canola oil).

The crafter market will feature dozens of local artisans selling holiday goods.
