Edgewood will host a public flag retirement ceremony Saturday, Feb. 21, as part of a series of civic events marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The ceremony is set for noon at Venus Park and will be conducted by the American Legion Post 22 of Estancia. Residents of all ages are invited to attend and to bring worn or damaged American flags for respectful retirement.
Organizers say the event aims to honor the flag while offering a hands-on lesson in civic tradition. An American flag should be retired when it can no longer be displayed with dignity, according to event information.
Visible signs that a flag needs retirement include frayed or torn edges, faded colors from sun or weather exposure, holes or brittle fabric and separated seams where the stripes or blue field meet. These conditions signal that a flag has reached the end of its service life.
The ceremony is one of several Edgewood plans to host through 2026 to commemorate the nation’s founding. Community members with questions or groups interested in participating can contact the town’s community liaison.
