Edgewood community members and officials gathered Dec. 23 to honor outgoing Commissioner Filandro Anaya for his leadership during the town’s transition to a new form of government. While his four-year term officially ended on Dec. 31 after he was overtaken by Stephen Murillo in the District 2 race, the community used the final commission meeting of the year to recognize his contributions.

During his tenure, Anaya became a central figure in Edgewood’s modernization. He is credited with helping guide the town through its transition to a commission-manager form of government and for spearheading the foundational Water Utility Ordinance. His legacy also includes successfully advocating for the local school district to be renamed to include “Edgewood.”

Anaya was elected during a pivotal time for the town. According to a press release from the Town of Edgewood, he helped navigate the complex changes in government structure. Officials also highlighted his leadership in securing Edgewood’s long-term water future through new utility legislation.

His civic involvement extended beyond the local commission. Anaya also served on the Santa Fe County Planning Commission and the Moriarty School Board of Education.

During the Dec. 23 meeting, Anaya’s daughter offered a personal tribute during public comment. “I grew up with you serving on the school board and working to ensure Edgewood was represented,” she said, adding that her father taught the family to “live fearlessly and to fight for what you believe in.”

Other community members, including District 1 candidate Adrian Chavez, also honored the outgoing official. “Phil showed up, he participated, he cared enough to serve — and that matters,” Chavez said.

Even those who disagreed with Anaya’s policies, such as resident Jean DeMarte, expressed respect for his presence in civic life. “I’ve always been able to respectfully disagree with you and continue the conversation,” DeMarte said.
