New Mexico residents have until Dec. 26 to submit creative names for state snowplows as part of the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s third annual naming contest.

The department will select 12 winning names to be displayed on plows operating across the state’s six highway districts this winter.

“Our snowplow operators play an important role in keeping our communities connected and our roads safe during the winter months,” said NMDOT Cabinet Secretary Ricky Serna. “We’re looking to New Mexicans for their flair, humor and originality to help give more of our snowplows unique names.”

Submissions are being accepted through noon Friday, Dec. 26, at dot.nm.gov/name-a-plow/. Each person may submit one name, limited to 20 characters.

The department is seeking winter-themed or New Mexico-inspired names. Vulgar, profane or politically inspired names — including plays on politicians’ names or slogans — will not be considered. Previously selected names are also ineligible.

NMDOT’s communications team will review submissions and select the 50 most creative entries. The public will then vote on finalists, with the top 12 names assigned to snowplows statewide. Once named, the plows keep their names throughout their service life.

Last year’s winners included “Snow Bueno, Snow Way, José!” and “Red Chilly Brrrr-ito,” while 2024 selections featured “Better Call Salt” and “Walter Whiteout.”
