Bernallilo County commissioners have approved a $1.6 million contract to build a nearly 2-mile multiuse trail in the East Mountains, officials announced Tuesday.

The Bernalillo County Commission authorized County Manager Cindy Chavez to award the contract to Compass, the low bidder at $1,619,237, including gross receipts tax, according to a county news release.

The Frost Road Trail Project will include construction of a 1.8-mile-long, 8-foot-wide trail and installation of three prefabricated pedestrian bridges along Frost Road between Candy Court and Vallecitos Road in the county’s District 5. The contract also covers clearing and tree removal, grading and culvert installation.

“The completion of this segment of the Frost Road Trail project is a huge win for the East Mountain community,” County Commission Chair Eric Olivas said in a statement. “The multiuse trail will increase pedestrian and bicycle safety while improving the quality of life for residents.”

Olivas said the trail will provide opportunities for residents to experience the area’s natural surroundings.

The project will be funded through county trail bonds and is expected to take 330 calendar days to complete, with a projected finish date in spring 2027. Construction will begin after the county issues a notice to proceed to the contractor.

The contract required commission approval because the project’s annual value exceeds $500,000, according to county administrative resolution 2023-77.
